CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Guts

Personality:
Guts is extraordinarily pragmatic. He comes across as really blunt and unfriendly to most people, though it's easy enough to get past that just by surviving near him for an extended period of time. He isn't necessarily as cold or aloof as he comes off, and instead finds himself caring for other people too much and too often, and so he preemptively attempts to ward off relationships with others by seeming cruel if his declaring his independence does not work. He turns down most offers of assistance if he is the only one standing to benefit, just so that he does not have to get attached to people, only for them to be killed. As such, Guts could be seen sleeping beneath trees and eating whatever he could catch, as well as travelling by foot up until he started travelling with a group again. Once he is with an adventuring party, he gives up on that independence only if it is beneficial to the other members, or if they insist.
Having been born a mercenary with an adoptive father who he ended up killing when he was threatened by him, he never was very good at connecting, and then he spent a number of years with The Band of the Hawk, getting to know and care for them, as well as finally learning to care for other people before it's leader turned and sacrificed them all to demons, betraying his trust and killing the only semblance of family that he'd ever known. Guts sought revenge for some time after that before his lover(who had been being cared for by the only other survivng member of The Band of the Hawk) wandered off after he left her behind. He had to return to find her then, and has since put most, but not all, of his energy into finding a place for her to be safe or returning her to her former self since she had become traumatized during the whole 'everyone is eaten by demons' thing. He still intends to get revenge, but his goals have shifted slightly, and having a host of people to assist him later on in this task has helped to mellow him out from the constantly angry/aggressive man that he once was.
Guts makes a small conscious effort not to hurt innocent people, however gruff and unfriendly he may appear, however, he doesn't mourn when they die, seeing death as being inevitable and unavoidable, and being of a mind that those who fight hard enough to survive will do so. For example, when he meets an old man and his granddaughter on the road who offer to help him, he initially turns them down citing that it would be too dangerous for them. They are eventually killed at night, and he doesn't feel really bad about it, saying that he HAD warned them, and he even has no issues cutting the young girl down when her body is possessed by a spirit. It hardly even made much of a dent in his demeanor. Even so, he can get very protective of certain people who manage to worm themselves into his 'inner circle', and he will happily sacrifice life and limb for those few people.
He is also an extraordinarily hard-headed man who thinks very simply. Guts tends to use brute force to solve his problems, and he has a hard time thinking around things in any logical fashion if the solution does not include flinging himself at things and cutting them with his sword. Despite this, he's skilled enough in combat tactics, having been Commander of the Hawk Raiders which was part of the Band of the Hawk- legendary for never once losing a battle. He just also has a problem with throwing himself to the fore of a battle and relying upon his own strength before anything, leading to how he'd often get into arguments with Casca in the past about how dangerous it had been for him to lead a charge, and how much trouble they'd be in without him.
Underneath all of this, Guts still has a lot of rage pent up that he'd originally unleashed all too readily. After an incident in which he nearly killed Casca when he was possessed by a beast inside of him that fed off of his rage, he had to learn to temper it, and with the help of a young witch named Schierke, Guts managed to do so. Now, he utilizes that rage to enter a 'berserk' state when in battle with particularly dangerous opponents, and since donning the cursed 'Armor of Berserk', he can get through a battle ignoring any and all pain, only stopping when his body is physically too damaged to continue. The downside is that in this state, he cannot or does not differentiate between friend and foe and often has to be pulled out of it by magic before he is consumed by the Beast that possesses him.
Even though Guts is in fact very powerful, he does not have a big head about him. Due to a mix of not wanting to be recognized as 'the Legendary Commander who killed 100 men with one broken arm' and the fact that he sees himself as just any other man who is fighting to stay alive, he tends to forget to mention his strength, though he has no problem being realistic about it either, even saying outright that he could destroy an entire ghost ship on his own before even challenging it, though he does so without much fanfare, simply stating it as a fact. He factors this in before anything else in a battle, though he has a problem with foresight when it comes to his own safety, later taking on a Sea God by jumping right into the beast's mouth in an attempt to kill it by destroying it's heart from the inside. He succeeds, but then is left inside of a giant dying beast that was well on it's way to sinking into the ocean.
